For Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. (2 Timothy 4:10)
Not every person who begins well finishes well.
The Apostle Paul mentions Demas among his fellow workers (Philemon 24). Demas was not a stranger to Christian ministry. He had served alongside one of the greatest missionaries in history. Yet, years later, Paul writes a heartbreaking statement: “Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world.” (2 Timothy 4:10)
Scripture does not tell us every detail of Demas’s departure, but it reveals the direction of his heart. His love for the present world had become greater than his commitment to the work of Christ. Demas’s story reminds us that spiritual ruin does not always begin with a public rejection of God.
Sometimes it begins quietly, as wordly desires gain influence over our decisions. A heart that once delighted in serving Christ can gradually become distracted by the things of this life. We must guard our hearts carefully. Faithfulness requires more than a good beginning; it requires continuing to follow Christ.
