Standing Before the Mirror

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22 NIV)

When you stand in front of a mirror, it tells you the truth. It does not flatter, exaggerate, or hide what needs attention. James reminds us that God’s Word functions
in exactly the same way. It reveals who we truly are, not to condemn us, but to transform us. James urges us to be “quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,” because a heart that listens is a heart that can change. But the real challenge comes in verses 22-25: hearing the Word is not enough. A person who hears but does not
act is like someone who glances at a mirror and immediately forgets what he looks like. Nothing changes.

The blessed life the fruitful, steady, Christ-shaped life—belongs to the one who looks intently into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it. This person refuses to walk away unchanged. He adjusts his attitudes, aligns his actions, and allows the Spirit to reshape his character.

As you worship today, let the Word be your mirror. Let it confront, correct, cleanse, and encourage. But above all, let it move you to obedience, for it is in doing, not merely hearing, that we become more like Christ and experience the freedom He gives. What one adjustment is the Spirit prompting you to make today?
