“For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.” Ecclesiastes 7:12
This verse draws a striking comparison between wisdom and wealth. Both can serve as a “defence” or protection—money can shield from poverty and hardship, while wisdom guards from foolish decisions and destruction.
Yet Solomon, who possessed both riches and understanding, points out that wisdom is superior. Money can preserve the body for a season, but wisdom preserves the soul and leads to lasting life.
The phrase “wisdom giveth life” reminds us that true wisdom flows from God (Proverbs 2:6). It’s not merely clever thinking but divine insight that guides one to righteousness, peace, and eternal truth. Many have wealth and still perish in folly, but the wise find life even in humble circumstances.
