The Local Church on Mission: From Congregation to Missionary Community

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NIV)

It is Missions Week 2026. This week affords us an opportunity to reflect on God’s call upon His church and our place in His redemptive mission. The church was never intended to be merely a gathering of believers enjoying fellowship and spiritual blessings. From the beginning, Christ envisioned a people empowered by the Holy Spirit and sent into the world as His witnesses (Acts 1:8)

This truth is beautifully demonstrated in Acts 13:1-4. The believers in Antioch were worshipping, praying, and fasting when the Holy Spirit called Barnabas and Saul-some of their best leaders-for a special mission, and the church released them for God’s greater purpose. They moved beyond being a congregation that gathered, to become a community that sent.

The same call remains upon us today. God invites every believer to participate in His mission through prayer, witness, giving, service, and discipleship. Whether across the street or across the world, we are called to make Christ known. During this Missions Week, prayerfully identify one person who needs Christ. Pray for that person daily, intentionally show them God’s love, and seek an opportunity to invite them to church, a fellowship gathering, or a conversation about faith.

Prayer: Lord, make us more than a congregation. Transform us into a missionary community, empowered by Your Spirit.
