“Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please
God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the
Lord Jesus to do this more and more.” (1 Thessalonians 4:1 NIV).
Having commended the Thessalonian believers for their progressive growth in the Lord (1 Thess. 1:1-10), and
having used his own experience and that of the Thessalonian believers themselves to remind them that the Christian journey is not an easy road (1 Thess. 2 & 3), Apostle Paul then urged them to continue on the part they were already treading. Paul acknowledges that the Thessalonians are already walking in a way that pleases God; however, he encourages them to do so “more and more” (v.1). This phrase signals that spiritual growth is a journey, not a destination.
The Phrase “Room for Improvement” indicates that something is not perfect; however, it does not necessarily imply that it is bad. It simply means that one’s current state is not the best possible outcome and that there is a possibility for positive change or advancement.
Thanks be to God for how far you have gone in your Christian journey; however, you are being challenged today to grow deeper in obedience and holiness. In your Christian journey, what areas need slight adjustments or enhancements that could make you live to please God more? Ask God for strength in your areas of weakness, and in your areas of strength, there is always room to expand your capacity. Keep growing, keep improving, you are not there yet. It is not over until it is over.
