“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
(Proverbs 4:23 NIV).
This passage of the scriptures encourages us to guard our hearts, for it is the wellspring of life. Guarding our hearts daily is about being intentional about what we allow to influence our thoughts, emotions, and values. Our hearts represent the core of whom we are: it is the seat of our desires, intentions, and moral compass. What you allow to take root in your hearts will inevitably manifest in your behavior, relationships, and overall
life direction.
Therefore, be mindful and selective about what you watch, read, and listen to. Avoid media or conversations that promote negativity or unhealthy perspectives. As Christians, the word of God plays a critical role in helping us to reflect, filter and nurture our hearts. Psalmist says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalms 119:11). Examine your life: how much of God’s word do you store in your heart? And how much of God’s word do you allow to influence your actions, words and decisions?
What goes on in your heart shapes the course of your actions, speech, decisions, and quality of life because everything you do flows from your heart. You can safeguard your heart and thoughts from negative influences, behavior, words, or fear through the word of God.
