“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12 NIV).
Matthew 7:12 is often referred to as the Golden Rule. Here, Jesus gives a summary of the spiritual and ethical teachings found throughout the Old Testament. This is the summary of the commandments and teachings of the Bible. Jesus encourages his listeners to treat others with the same kindness, respect, and fairness that they also desire for themselves. The phrase “in everything” indicates that this rule applies to all aspects of our lives.
Jesus encourages us to treat others as we would like to be treated. In whatever way you want people to treat you, do the same for others. Whatever you don’t want people to do to you, do not do the same to others. Do you desire that people treat you with kindness, respect, and fairness? Then, treat others with the same kindness, respect and fairness. Do you want people to add value to you? Then, add value to them as well.
