“Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.” (1 Thess. 5:12-13 NIV).
Paul urges the Thessalonian believers to recognize and respect their leaders, holding them in high regard and loving them for their work. This respect is not just for their position but for the hard work and dedication they put into guiding the congregation. It encourages a culture of appreciation and support for those in leadership roles. Paul also admonishes the believers to live in peace with one another. The atmosphere of mutual respect, peace, and love helps to build strong and healthy relationships within the church community.
When church members respect, support and appreciate their leaders, it reduces conflicts and promotes harmony; it helps the church to thrive and fulfil its missions and goals. Recognizing and respecting leaders also implies that leaders are accountable to their congregation. Leaders should act responsibly and ethically, knowing that their efforts are valued and their actions are observed. As individuals and the church, let us continually be committed to respecting, valuing, supporting, and appreciating our leaders.
