“We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 NIV).
The letter to the Thessalonians was written by Apostle Paul to the believers in the church at Thessalonica, a church he founded during his second missionary journey. Paul had to leave Thessalonica sooner than he desired because of opposition and riot. However, when the news of the progress of the believers in Thessalonica reached Paul, he wrote to commend them for their progressive growth in the Lord and challenged them to
correct some misunderstandings.
The believers in Thessalonica were in an environment that was hostile to Christian values, but they held on to their faith, love and hope in Christ. Hence, Paul expresses his deep appreciation for their faithfulness. He commends their work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope, demonstrating how their faith is active and enduring.
We are in a world where living and maintaining a pure Christian life is becoming almost impossible. A world full of seductive images, sexual pressures, corruption, persecution, and many other wicked activities. In the midst of all these, God expects us to continue to grow in faith. Therefore, the remembrance of the Thessalonian believers can serve as encouragement to us to hold on to our faith, love others selflessly, and remain hopeful in Christ’s promises. Can it be said of you that you are a growing Christian? Examine yourself and make amends where necessary.
