“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.” (Philippians 3:10-11 NIV)
Every human being is pursuing something: success, comfort, recognition/fame, security, or achievement. But Paul, a man who had everything the world and religion could offer, makes a shocking confession, saying, “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Phil. 3:8).
At the time of writing this letter, in AD 60-62, Paul was approximately 55-57 years old, having undergone about 25-27 years of spiritual growth, development, and active service in God’s vineyard. He had planted numerous churches, with at least six epistles written. He had endured numerous persecutions, seen visions, and walked with Christ for decades. Yet he says, “I’m not done.” I want to know Christ. I want more of Christ. If Paul, after all these is still saying “I want to know,” then you and I still have a long way to go.
Beloved, what are you longing for, and what do you feel more comfortable with: activities or knowledge? Paul was not longing for more activities, titles, or recognition. But more of Christ that is personal and experiential. Know that knowing Christ is the greatest treasure, the highest privilege, and the deepest joy of the Christian life.
