Moving On to Higher Ground: Letting Go of What Holds You Down

“Though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: … But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.” (Philippians3:4,7 NIV)

Our theme for this year is “Moving on to Higher Ground.” Higher ground is not about status, comfort, or achievement. It is a call to grow deeper in Christ, stronger in faith, deeper in surrender, and clearer in purpose. However, higher ground begins with letting go of what holds us down. Paul warns the church against placing confidence in the flesh. He lists his own impressive résumé/credentials; not to boast, but to show that
even the best of human achievements cannot lift us to God.

He says, “Whatever was gain to me, I now consider loss.” This is the first step to higher ground. Just as Paul had to let go of his religious credentials, we too must identify what holds us down in our bid to move to higher ground this year. You cannot climb while clinging to what Christ is asking you to release.

What are the things holding you back that you need to let go of? Could it be Pride in what you have accomplished, fear of losing control, bitterness that poisons your joy, relationships that drain rather than build, habits that deprive rather than heal, comfort zones that keep you from obedience, past successes or failures, old identities, religious habits, cultural practices, titles, roles, or reputations, emotional attachments, and wounds that have become familiar. May our feet be planted on higher ground.
