‘Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves’ (Mattew 10:16)
Jesus said, “Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). He spoke these words as He sent His disciples into a hostile world, warning them to combine purity with prudence. A vivid illustration of this wisdom is found in Joseph’s life (Genesis 41). When Pharaoh dreamed of famine, Joseph didn’t just interpret the dream—he acted with foresight. He stored grain during the years of plenty, ensuring survival during scarcity. Joseph’s wisdom protected nations and advanced God’s purposes.
Likewise, Christians are called to discern danger, plan ahead, and act with Spirit-led insight without compromising righteousness. Being “wise as a serpent” means understanding the world’s ways without being corrupted by them—using godly wisdom to outmaneuver evil, protect the innocent, and fulfill God’s mission. As Joseph used wisdom to preserve life, so must believers use discernment and strategy to advance God’s kingdom in a fallen world.
