After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. (Judges 2:10 NIV).
With all that the Lord had done for the people of Israel- the various miraculous acts in the wilderness, the conquest and settlement in the promised land; the scriptures say, “… another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.” How could they have known since they did not witness those wonderful acts of God? They neither knew the Lord nor what the Lord had done for their fathers because they were not part of it, and they were most likely not taught.
An adage in an African tribe says, “The religious act that is hidden from the children will certainly fade away.” The responsibility to teach the younger generation lies with the older generation, and when the older generation fails in their responsibility, everyone will suffer the consequences. Let us not relent in passing on the gospel and godly character to the younger generation, and the younger generation should be willing to learn from the older. May this generation not fail in serving the Lord. Amen.
